Episode 15: Technology, Students and Instruction

Listen here (60 minutes, mp3)

In this episode, Jason and Rachel interview Chad Mairn, and we talk about a variety of technology issues and questions, including bringing technology to new populations, QR codes, the future of technology, research, and the library, and how to teach Wikipedia. Oh, and how to update an information literacy tutorial.

  6. I've tried different QR code generators and found a vast difference in the codes generated for the same url. Can I mix and match the generator and reader? If I create a code with BeeTag do I need a BeeTag reader to decode it correctly? I'm concerned that if I make lots of codes and students get directed to some unrelated page or "sorry the page doesn't exist" that will kill interest in the codes.
    Thanks! Andy Heiz

  7. It is my understanding that if you create a QR code with, for example, BeeTagg that you need the BeeTagg reader installed on your device in order to interpret it. I usually place a little blurb next to the QR code that states what is required to view the code. I am sure a "universal" QR code will be created once all mobile devices come equipped with a universal reader. I hope this helps.

  8. I loved this episode, it was incredibly helpful to me and I have so many 'things' to go away and look up - thanks guys! I was listening in the train and taking notes in 'notes' on my iphone and laughing at myself, because this kind of behaviour was so embedded in the whole point of the podcast!

I do hope you get a smart phone soon Jason, although I think the humble pen and notebook is underrated.
